COMMODORE'S REPORT - March 2010
COMMODORES REPORT
The Days are now getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping but the water temperature still appears to be around 21 – 22 degrees so the fishing still seems to be good with some very good results in the harbour. After being here over 3 years I managed to catch my first fish in the harbour at long last.
There have been some outstanding Marlin catches with young Shane Housley catching a big Blue at some 232.9kgs a pending NZ record. Mark Menefy with a 174kg blue and Tim Santner also with a Blue at 174.4kgs. Photos are on the website – www.bbsfc.co.nz
Downstairs
The Downstairs Bar is now completed. The Building Inspector has been for the final inspection and apart from a couple of minor requests all is fine.
We are still looking for some more suitable memoribilia to hang on the walls. If you have any please let Gary in the Office know.
Don’t forget the Mini Library downstairs for ‘SWAP A BOOK’. We are looking for good books, hard or soft covered to add to the Library.
TV is available downstairs as well so any member can go in at any time have a Coffee watch SKY or read quietly in the corner – what could be better.
Lifetime Memberships
We are still looking for members to purchase prepaid Lifetime Memberships until 31 March to help in the funding for downstairs. These are for $1000 and are available to any members 45 yrs and over. This is a limited opportunity with only a few days left. Please contact Gary on 07 863 5006.
Junior Sailing School
There have been a couple of regattas held and from all intents and purposes they have been very successful with even boats from other sailing groups in the harbour coming to visit us as well to give support.
Club Policies
Club Policies are in there infancy as yet but they are available for members to see. These are to be read in conjunction with the Rules and will be available both upstairs and downstairs for those members who wish to read them. If for one reason or another you disagree with something in those policies a member is able to fill out a Form available and it can be considered at the next monthly Committee meeting for approval or otherwise.
Channel Progress
The devil is in the detail but progress is being made. Other people who could be involved are being consulted with even members from other interested groups on the harbour as well. The Draft Application should be finished soon.
New Fishing Rules
A Fishing Steering Committee has been working on new Rules for Fishing. These have been approved by the Committee. They will come into force on the 1 August 2010
Club Manager
I believe the time is right for the Club to create a Club Managers position. I know there is a great deal of support for this but there also appears to be some reluctance or reservations on the part of some members. I would very much appreciate some feedback on this as I really cant see any negative barriers arising out of the proposal only positive ones. An AGM is not necessary as the Rules give the incumbent Committee the power to create the position but it has been decided that Member support for such a move is important.
At a Committee meeting it was decided to hold a Members Meeting to gauge support for this position and it is to be held on Easter Weekend - Sat 3 April at 2.00pm. I would like to see as many members present as possible as this is quite an important step for our Club.
Social Membership
The Association to which all sporting clubs belong to ( SCANZ ) has indicated that Social Memberships are not permitted under the current Licensing Laws. The Committee has looked into and dealt with this matter and you will be receiving a letter with your new invoice for the coming year explaining the new rules. This will affect about 20 members that we can seat present, however there may be more, if you have any doubt as to your position contact Gary in the Office. Upcoming new Membership Rules will be covered by a Remit to be tabled at the AGM in July.
For Sale
We have got a couple of Aluminium Garage Tilta Doors for sale left over from the Downstairs development – interested ? - make us an offer we cant refuse!
