Fishing Spots Around Waihi Beach, Bowentown and karangahake Gorge.

Fishing is one of the main attractions at Waihi Beach. Surfcasting from the ocean beach and the rocky headlands such as Lead Point and Yellow Point. A short walk from Waihi beach brings you to Orakawa, where you can fish off the rocks and surfcast.

Longlines are a common site if you are walking along the beach.
Boat fishing, either inside the harbour or beyond the Bowentown entrance and out to the deeper waters around Mayor Island or the Aldermans. Not far off Matakana Island is Karewa Island and there are plenty of reefs to be found after leaving the ramp at Bowentown Boat and Sport Fishing club or Tanners Point ramp. Smaller boats can also leave from Anzac Bay. Obviously with all the reefs and islands it is a divers paradise. Holiday makers are very welcome at our club and can glean quite a bit of information from some of the fishing locals who are members of our club

Trout Fishing

For the trout fishing enthusiast there are plenty of rivers only 20 to 30 minutes drive to the Karangahake Gorge from Waihi Beach.
The Ohinemuri River and the Waitawheta River, both very popular with the trout fisherman.
If you want to take a day trip there is Rotorua, where lakes abound with trout.
Approx 1.5 hours drive from the beach.
